Third trial in Grunwald murder case scheduled for March

Thursday, a judge set a trial date of March 6, 2019, for codefendants 17-year-old Bradley Renfro and now-20-year-old Austin Barrett.

The trial will be the third Grunwald's parents have to sit through, but that could change if Renfro's attorney successfully argues for his case to be severed from Barrett's.

Cellphone seizure, statements spotlighted at Johnson's evidentiary hearing

As the second suspect in David Grunwald's murder gets ready for trial, it will be up to a judge to determine what evidence the jurors will see.

Dominic Johnson is one of four people accused of killing 16-year-old Grunwald on November 13, 2016. A jury convicted codefendant Erick Almandinger of all nine charges, including first-degree murder, earlier this year.

Johnson's attorney, public defender Lyle Stohler, filed several motions to limit the evidence shown during the trial, including the seizure of Johnson's cellphone and statements he made to Alaska State Troopers during the investigation.

Grunwald campaign plays part in jury selection

Defense attorney Lyle Stohler added several questions about Edie Grunwald's campaign, asking people if they've ever contributed financially or put up yard signs or bumper stickers in support.

"There are very few witnesses the general public could have given money to," Stohler told the judge. "That's not an issue you run across every day. It's an issue I'm very concerned."

Stohler said he believes people who donate money to Edie Grunwald's campaign could not be impartial if they were seated on the jury.

Judge Gregory Heath added another question to the form that would ask people if they could still be unbiased if they contributed money.

Erick Almandinger, now 18 years old, will likely not be officially sentenced until March after being found guilty of all nine charges against him.

Bradley Renfro and Austin Barrett will be tried as a pair, with their evidentiary hearing set to start the week of December 10.

Dominic Johnson, also 18, will see trial the week of Oct. 29.

Almandinger sentencing delayed until 2019

so are they holding Almandinger's sentencing for him be a witness in these other cases? Who do we think was the shooter? It seems like if the .4o caliber was Almandinger's and the murder was with a 9mm maybe he was not the shooter. Also text shown at trial seem to suggest Almandinger was not the ringleader in this situation. Just from looking all thats come out with other crimes the group was involved in Barrett seems to be the one that is involved in every single one of them I'm guessing he is one of the ringleaders and most likely shooter.

Trial date uncertain for final 2 suspects in Grunwald murder case

The trial for murder suspects Austin Barrett and Bradley Renfro likely won't begin until late 2019.

The pair had a pre-trial conference Wednesday morning. At this point, Barrett and Renfro are expected to go to trial together unless one of their attorneys files a motion to give one of the suspects their own trial, which was the case for Almandinger and Johnson.

Judge Gregory Heath said all motions need to be filed by Jan. 30.

To complicate matters, Judge Heath is retiring at the end of the year. He is still able to come back to preside over the other suspects' trial, however.

Heath said he was reluctant to set a trial date for Renfro and Barrett and instead set an evidentiary hearing for the week of March 4, 2019.
